The Chair of Foreign Languages (formerly the chair of Russian and Foreign Languages) was established in 1967, from the university’s founding day. Over different periods, distinguished scholars and respected educators have worked in the chair, making significant contributions to its establishment and development, creating the best traditions within the chair.
From 1984 to 2016, the chair was led by Associate Professor Hasmik Yeghishiyevna Tunyan, who made a great contribution to the education and upbringing of students.
Since October 2016, the chair has been headed by PhD, Associate Professor Liana Sashiki Ohanyan.
The Chair of Foreign Languages teaches English, French, Russian, and German, serving two faculties of the university (Humanities, Natural Sciences, Engineering and Economics) in bachelor’s and master’s programs for various specialties in both full-time and part-time forms, tailoring language instruction to professional needs.
In the 2017-2018 academic year, the department chair introduced the “English Language and Literature” specialty. This marked a milestone in the chair’s history, as it became a professional chair in addition to being an interfaculty chair, preparing Bachelor’s degree specialists in pedagogy.
The chair employs skilled, knowledgeable, and professional lecturers who regularly participate in retraining courses and international programs in the field of higher education. The chair primarily focuses on the methodological and organizational issues of teaching foreign languages at the university (reviewing and rewriting course descriptions, enhancing the professional quality of lecturers).
The mission of the chair aligns with the university’s strategy, which is to organize foreign language instruction with the aim of deepening students’ language knowledge, developing their communication and intercultural abilities, and broadening their worldview to promote intercultural understanding and the effective implementation of professional activities.
The chair has great potential and serious challenges regarding the introduction of new specialties, which will further expand its activities by adding new specialists.
