The Departments of Mathematics and Physics at Goris State University were established in 1967, the year the university was founded. Over the years, these departments were renamed, and based on them, new departments were formed — including the Department of Physics and General Technical Subjects, the Department of Physics and Industrial Electronics (later renamed the Department of Electronics and Electrical Engineering), and the Department of Mathematics and Informatics. In 2020, the Departments of Mathematics and Informatics, Electronics and Electrical Engineering, as well as the Physics Sector were dissolved and restructured into the Department of Mathematical and Physical-Technical Sciences. In 2023, this department was reorganized to form the current Department of Mathematics and Physics.
At present, the department employs 11 lecturers, including 1 Doctor of Sciences (Professor) and 3 Candidates of Sciences (Associate Professors). The department offers degree programs in Mathematics, Physics, Informatics, and Applied Mathematics, and provides instruction for both full-time and part-time students across all faculties of the university. Faculty members have actively participated in national and international conferences, and have published articles in leading academic journals. They have also authored and submitted for publication a number of textbooks, educational and methodological manuals, and lecture materials.
The Department of Mathematics and Physics at Goris State University cooperates with the Institute of Mechanics of the National Academy of Sciences of Armenia, the National Polytechnic University of Armenia, the Armenian State Pedagogical University, Shirak State University, as well as regional schools and organizations in the field of information technology.
